Many women wear exhaustion as evidence of devotion: to family, to ministry, to work. We have somehow absorbed the idea that the tired woman is the faithful one, and that rest must be earned by first emptying every list. But the God who created us also modeled rest, and commanded it, long before burnout was a modern vocabulary word.
And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. (Genesis 2:2, KJV)
God was not tired. His rest was not recovery; it was a rhythm He built into the world and later wrote into the commandments with the same weight as "thou shalt not steal." Rest is not a loophole for the weak. It is an ordinance for the wise.
Rest Is A Command, Not A Luxury
When something is a command, we stop treating it as optional and start arranging our lives around it. We do not congratulate ourselves for not stealing; we simply do not steal. Sabbath rest belongs in that category. It is not the leftover time after everything else is handled, because everything else is never handled.
Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work. (Exodus 20:9-10, KJV)
Sabbath Is a Statement of Trust
To rest is to declare, in practice, that the world will not fall apart without your constant management. It is an act of trust in God's sufficiency, not a reward for productivity. The woman who can stop is preaching a quiet sermon to her own anxious heart: God is the one holding this together, not me.
Israel learned this with the manna. On the sixth day they gathered enough for two, and the extra did not rot. God can make six days of provision stretch to cover seven. He cannot be out-worked, and He does not need us to skip rest to keep His plans on track.
What Rest Is Not
Sabbath is not the same as collapsing. Scrolling until midnight, numbing out in front of a screen, or being too depleted to speak is not the rest God offers. Biblical rest is intentional and often includes worship, unhurried time with people you love, being out in creation, and doing things that restore rather than merely distract.
It is also not laziness. The command assumes six days of real labor. Sabbath is the punctuation that makes the sentence of a working life readable.
Start Small
This week, consider one small act of Sabbath: a screen-free morning, an unhurried hour, a genuine pause. Turn your phone off during a meal. Take a walk with no podcast. Let one evening be unproductive on purpose, and notice the discomfort that surfaces, that discomfort is worth praying about.
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28, KJV)
Rest is not the opposite of faithfulness. It may be one of its clearest expressions.
Prayer Points
Father, forgive me for wearing exhaustion as a badge, and teach me to receive the rest You have commanded, in the name of Jesus.
Lord, help me trust You enough to stop, knowing that You hold all things together while I sleep, in the name of Jesus.
